George Spotton

George Spotten was born on March 23rd, 1877 in the township of Howick, Ontario to parents James Spotton and Margaret Hickson.
George received his education at Howick Township Public School, Harriston High School and Toronto Normal School. In 1895, George received his bachelor's degree in history from Queen's University. In 1898 he married Sarah Glenn from Listowel, Ontario. They had one child together, daughter Glenna. During the First World War, George briefly served in the Canadian Army as a broadcast journalist. George's wife Sarah sadly passed away in 1920. George would marry again in 1922 to Catherine Taylor. He opened a chain of business colleges throughout central Ontario including Wingham Business College, Orangeville Business College and the Canada Business College in Toronto. George was a member of Wingham town council for ten years and Mayor for three years. He was a member of a number of organizations; Lions Club, Foresters, Oddfellows, Masons and Past Master of his Orange Lodge. George was elected as a member of parliament for the Huron North, Ontario region where he ran as a Conservative. He advocated less autonomy for the provinces and the implementation of a Canadian cultural program which was scrapped at the time but then revived almost a century later by the Liberals. George passed away on April 20, 1936 and he was laid to rest at Wingham Cemetery in Wingham, Ontario. |
