John Johnston (1824-1908)

John Johnston was born in Ireland in 1824. He emigrated to Canada in 1842 and was one of the first settlers of Mirris, Ontario.
In 1863, he was lured by the Cariboo Gold Rush to British Columbia where he settled in Port Moody. In 1896, John moved to New Westminster, British Columbia and purchased the old Orange Hall. The Hall was destroyed by fire in 1898 so he had a new Hall raised on the same site where he lived until his death in 1908. At the time he was one of the oldest member of the Loyal Orange Association having been a member for 65 years. He was one of the founders of the first Orange Lodge in British Columbia. |
