About the Lodge
Stittsville's Royal Canadian Legion Hall was once the home of Stittsville Loyal Orange Lodge No. 489.
Built in 1930, the three storey cement block structure cost $10,500 and replaced earlier Orange Halls in the community that had been lost to fire. As the Orange Hall, the building served as Stittsville's community hall for years, hosting dances, parties, Saturday matinee movies for children and community gatherings. The building was also used to temporarily hold school classes prior to an addition of school rooms at the Stittsville Union Public School (now Frederick Banting Alternate School). On September 30th, 1970 the Lodge sold their hall to Royal Canadian Legion Branch 618 for the price of $25,000. There was a proviso included in the sales contract that provided that Loyal Orange Lodge No. 489 would remain as a lodger on the third floor to continue their activities as well as hold their Thursday evening meetings.
