Sylvan Valley Loyal Orange Lodge No. 491
St. Joseph Island, Ontario, Canada
The MMHA Annual Meeting THE ISLAND CLIPPINGS certainly missed a very eventful Annual General Meeting of the Matthews Memorial Hospital Association on January 24th. Current Board Members Shelley Bailey and John Shannon chose not to stand for re-election this year. Elected in their place were Albert Crowder of Jocelyn Township and Antoni (Toni) Stasie of Hilton Township. Although one of these seats should technically have been filled by a resident of the North Shore, no candidates came forward to fill Ms. Bailey’s “North Shore” seat, prompting the election of an island resident to complete the Board. Re-elected this year were Arthena Hecker, Barb Jackson, Sue Barlow, Ann Bell, Sheila Jackson, Ed Karhi and Mark Henderson. The new Board then elected Arthena Hecker as Chair, Sue Barlow Vice-Chair, Sheila Campbell Treasurer and Mark Henderson as Secretary. Arthena was warm in her welcome to the new Board members and congratulated the re-elected members as well. She then got on with the business at hand: “It is my pleasure to inform you that from December to January 24th, the doctor recruitment and retention funding initiative has reached $64,478.57. Thank you to each and everyone and to the townships. Your generosity and support is truly appreciated. Doctor recruitment and retention is vital to ongoing health care and to keeping our hospital open.” Sandy Ross, Don Baker and Joe Cardinal, representing the Loyal Orange Sylvan Valley Lodge 491 were also on hand to present a cheque from the Orange Lodge for $6,000 for doctor recruitment and retention. “John Shannon went immediately after the AGM and moved the thermometer up to just over the $70,000.” smiled Arthena. “I am so pleased and excited that our communities raised $71,478.57 in that short period of time. It really shows the concern and commitment to having and keeping doctors and our hospital open. Blessing and thanks to all who contributed.” “We are looking forward to our new doctors coming and practicing medicine. Dr. Guy Lupien will be here on the 18th of February and Dr. Beller in April.” she continued. “Many thanks to our recruiter Sally Hagman for her expertise in obtaining these doctors for us.” And finally, a word of contrition from the Island Clippings: While publishing our December 27th issue, we inadvertently omitted MMHA’s notice of its thanks to all who had contributed to the 2012 Christmas Tree Lighting, a complete list of whom was supposed to appear in that issue. We offer our apologies to MMHA and to all whose generous support was not publicly acknowledged. |
