Walter Henry Hall was born in Britstol, England on January 29th, 1858. He was the son of Thomas Henry Waite Hall and Sarah Burrow Jones and was educated at the Bristol Grammar School.
During the summer of 1882 Henry emigrated to Canada, settling in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. In the winter of 1883, Henry started working at the Portage la Prairie Review and subsequently at the Marquette Liberal. In June 1885, he established the Virden Advance for C.J. Atkinson of the Liberal. On May 25th, 1887, Henry married Jane Bulloch (1868-1944) of Reston. They had ten children; Jeanette Mabel Hall, Charles Leslie Hall, Lillian Ruth Hall, Ralph Victor Hall, Thomas Wilfred Hall, Pheba C. Hall, Sarah Hall, Ellen Hall, Sidney Hall and Walter Hall. In April 1889 Henry became the proprietor and editor of the Virden Advance, expanding it several times. In February 1896 he moved to Wolseley, Northwest Territories (now Saskatchewan) where he was editor of the Wolseley News until his death. Henry was a member of the Baptist Church, Loyal Orange Association, Black Knights of Ireland and the Royal Templars of Temperance. Henry passed away of heart failure on December 5th, 1906 in Wolseley, Saskatchewan. |
